I was thinking the other day, Valentine’s Day is starting to kind of get a bad rap. There’s all the pushback about it being a “Hallmark Holiday” that was invented just to get us to buy more stuff. And maybe that’s true. I know in the movies it’s normal for characters to expect a huge gigantic romatic gesture and/or to be super depressed if they happen to not have a date on Valentine’s Day but I don’t think that’s really how it is or should be on Valentine’s Day in the real world. In fact, I love celebrating it with kids the most because we can talk about it as a holiday where you appreciate the people you love. And I was thinking it would be nice if grown-up Valentine’s Day was more like this too. You know, kind of more like Thanksgiving, where you’re thankful for your loved ones. Whether that’s a significant other or your parents or your best friend. You know what I mean? It would be nice if we stopped focusing on the grand romance that is never real life and instead just focus on love in all its forms. So I grabbed this little blank chalkboard from the Target dollar spot (what are they calling it these days? I forget…) it was a $3 item, and I got to work. And now I have a nice spot to leave a little note for Aa or O or even Baby V (we’ll read it to her) or hey you could even leave one for the housecleaner or the babysitter! Everyone likes to be appreciated! Here’s how I made it..

Heart Chalkboard Shape

Acrylic paint

White vinyl

Chalk

Cutting machine

Clear contact paper

1. If your heart chalkboard has a border, go ahead and paint it however you like. As long it’s got a matte chalkboard finish,  you shouldn’t need to sand it before applying acrylic paint. I chose a dark magenta with little pink hearts on the scallops. DIY Valentine's Day Gratitude Chalkboard | littleredwindow.com DIY Valentine's Day Gratitude Chalkboard | littleredwindow.com2. Then peel off the contact paper, they vinyl should stick to the chalkboard. DIY Valentine's Day Gratitude Chalkboard | littleredwindow.com7. Before you write on your chalkboard, rub all over it with the side of a piece of chalk and then wipe that off with a tissue. This prevents ghosted permanent images.
